What does it mean to be content

Tonight, I am reflecting on contentment. What did Paul mean when he said "I have learned to be content in all circumstances," and is that really attainable in an imperfect sinful world? When contentment doesn't come after months of praying for contentment in a situation, does that mean God is saying it's time to get out of that situation? Is that the way He speaks through the pillar of "situation"? Or does that mean one must work harder in order to obtain contentment... In "any circumstance" like Paul teaches.
