Weevils BEGONE!

For a couple days in a row I was spotting these weird looking bugs around the house, just one per day, you know, no big deal. I figured I'd clean pretty good over the next few days just to be sure, but no worries.

Monday night I was all excited that Allen was to return home from the Philippines (he went there on missions over Thanksgiving by the way) and so I decided that I would make him some of his favorite cookies, No Bake Cookies. I got the ingredients all ready and boiling and pulled out the Oatmeal to prepare it. When I opened the Oatmeal to my complete and utter discust I was greeted by loads of Weevils (although at the time I didn't know what they were). Yuck!! OKAY, so I was totally grossed out, I closed the Oatmeal and went to call my mom. Hahaha, no such luck it was 6:45 am there, not going to do it (lucky for her - since she had called me at almost 1 am the other day!). So I started googling these bugs trying to figure out what they were. That was of course when I discovered that they were called "Weevils." Well, I went back to the kitchen after a bit to see what the situation looked like, and there were about 100 of them crawling on the Oatmeal container and in the sink (OK reliving this has given me the ebeejebees). So at that point it was a bit later, so I called mom. Told her what was going on, what I found out on the internet and all. She said the internet's advice was good, but that I should check all my other grains just to be sure. So needless to say I did that, not fun.

So I began the process of cleaning out the cabinet where the Oatmeal was, and sure enough there were more weevils in there, fortunately not in other grains, just in the cabinet. Took the Oatmeal out, and the salt (since I had found 1 in my salt shaker the day before and I wanted to be sure) and down to the corner where the garbage (surreggi) sits. Vacuumed them all away and out of the cabinet. YUCK! Cleaned everything with clorox. Allen came home to find me in my cleaning clothes, my pink ajuma gloves and no cookies! Bummer. Not at all what I had planned. However, having left these mangy weevils loose, they may have been crawling in my bed at night! TEN TIMES WORSE!! Generally them crawling in my bed is my only fear when it comes to bugs, UNLESS of course they have lots of legs, I can't catch them, or they have been at some point drowned in my mouth and mistaken for potato chips (that's a story for another time!).

So, since then I haven't seen any weevils, and I am quite happy about that, although I am not saying that I haven't stopped looking over my shoulder for them!

  • Your story creeped me out so much that my morbid curiosity took over and I google image searched weevils to see what the little miscreants looked like and MAN I give you props because I would have left the house screaming and waited until my husband came home to take care of it! I have a VERY strong phobia of bugs and you just got put on a very high pedestal in my book for taking care of that yourself! It wasn't more than a minute after I searched them that I had to turn my eyes and exit the page because even LOOKING at them was too much for me!
